Two policemen in Alexandria, Virginia, revived a newborn in the tense moments after he was born not breathing.

Law enforcement officials said Monday that the Alexandria Police Department (APD) got a 911 call just after midnight about a family in desperate need of help when a mother gave birth suddenly to a lifeless baby.

It was a few minutes after midnight when the frantic call came to 9-1-1 and APD Officers responded.

A newborn baby was lifeless when an Alexandria woman suddenly gave birth. APD Officers Hiltz and Reilly entered an apartment in the 3800 block of Executive Avenue, rushing to locate the baby. They found a newborn not breathing and without a heartbeat. As first responders, their training immediately kicked in, and without hesitation, Officer Hiltz began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while Officer Reilly managed to keep the family calm. After two rounds of CPR Officer Hiltz located a pulse and the baby began to “fuss”, as Officer Hiltz described it. The sound of a newborn baby crying could be heard throughout the home.

Today, both mom and baby are in good health. After a short stay in the NICU, baby Luis IV and family returned home.

As an officer, you never really know what lies on the other side of a 9-1-1 call. The swift actions of these APD officers saved this baby’s life. “My entire focus was on making sure baby Luis was going to be okay,” said APD Officer Hiltz. “It felt amazing to hear him cry. In that moment all the stress and fear of the situation just left me.”

With more than four years of APD service, Hiltz humbly says, “I’m just lucky to get to go to work and do the job I love. It’s this kind of call, getting to help baby Luis and his family, that makes this job so rewarding and worth it.” A week later, the officers were able to visit baby Luis and his family. “You could just feel the excitement and pride of Mom and Dad,” Hiltz said talking about their recent visit.

Officers Hiltz and Reilly were credited by the EMS Lieutenant on the scene with saving the baby’s life. The emergency room doctor also commended our APD Officers for their outstanding work. Thank you Officers Hiltz and Reilly for your exemplary service.

The policemen who rushed to the scene remained calm and quickly took matters into their own hands, the agency continued:

The baby, Luis IV, and his mother are doing well and have since returned home after a short stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Social media users showered praise on the officers for saving the baby’s life, one person writing, “Well done!” while another user said, “Wow!!! Incredible job. I was tearing up reading this. What a story of two amazing heroes!”

Hiltz said he was laser-focused on making sure Luis was going to be okay in the tense moments, adding, “It felt amazing to hear him cry. In that moment, all the stress and fear of the situation just left me.”

The officers later enjoyed a visit with the baby and his mother and father.

According to the Mayo Clinic, CPR is a lifesaving technique that can revive a person who has stopped breathing or no longer has a heartbeat.

“CPR can keep oxygen-rich blood flowing to the brain and other organs until emergency medical treatment can restore a typical heart rhythm,” the website reads. source

  1. So glad they were there, knew what to do; glad they also had a good experience! What a difficult job, so a good outcome was a blessing for them, too.

Geri; it might just be my particular phone, but the Mosab article posted on inbox, but I couldn’t bring it up. I’m not on Facebook or the rest, but is this what’s called shadow banning? Maybe it’s just a glitch on my phone.

    1. There ya go……you should be able to see it now. Somehow it got deleted but it stayed in ‘trash’ of all places. I went in an restored it.

If only the majority (or even all — I am that greedy!) of stories were like this, rather than all the horrid evil that is going on! I am ever so glad they were able to save the baby’s life — jolly good show to them! 🙂

I still can’t get the Mosab article. It just says “Oops. That page can’t be found.” Usually when that happens, and it happens occasionally, I can find it through the next article going to previous but not this time.

  4. PRAISE JESUS-YESHUA CHRIST-MESSIAH for these Police Officers saving this BABY AMEN-AMEIN TODAH-RABAH – THANK YOU!!
