Delight In Him
“Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For
they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in
the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight
yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm
37:1-4
This passage urges believers to do two things: “Fret not because of
evildoers…and to delight themselves in the Lord.” Why is such a plea necessary to
the children of God? Because it’s impossible to delight yourself in the Lord, and be
fretting and stewing about what the wicked are doing all the time.
There is so much wickedness displaying itself in every corner of the world;
from the home, to the marketplace, to the government, to the church, it rears its
ugly head. To read or watch the daily news is to witness corruption on every hand.
Ungodliness, wickedness, immorality, and violence parade up and down our
streets, increasing daily. What can we do? stop fretting about it; stop being envious
of the rich, glamorous, and famous wicked!
Psalm 37 clearly outlines for us why we should not fret because of evildoers
or be envious of the wicked. It tells us, they shall soon be cut down like grass, they
shall be cut off, they shall be no more, the Lord laughs at them because He sees
their day coming, their swords shall enter their own hearts, their bows shall be
broken, their arms shall be broken, they shall perish, they shall vanish away into
smoke, the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off, the transgressors shall be
destroyed, and the future of the wicked shall be cut off. In other words, God’s got
His eyes on the wicked; He wants us to focus our eyes on Him.
There are more reasons to delight ourselves in the Lord than I could ever
possibly write. But with great thanksgiving and praise, I will attempt to write what
space allows.
God love you and me! Jesus loves you and me! If ever there was an
irrefutable truth in this world its: Jesus loves you and me! God loves people; God
loves the sinner man; He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should
come to repentance and be saved. That is, turn from this world and come to His
Son Jesus. For all who have done that, and all who will do that, the Lord becomes
a great delight.
You didn’t choose God; He chose you and called you; you were dead in sin
and He chose to reveal His Son to you, and then you called out to Jesus and were
born again. In that hour you believed, amazing realities came into being in your
life. You went from a dead, hell-bound sinner to a living, justified, sanctified, child
of God. You’re not your own; Jesus purchased you with His own blood, to bring
you to God as His child and He as your Father.
When you make the Lord your delight, He will give you the desires of your
heart; He will keep you in your way as you commit your life to Him. As you wait
patiently for Him to come, you will inherit the earth one day—a new earth! And
you shall delight yourselves in an abundance of peace; God has prepared
incorruptible, immortal bodies for us to enjoy that very thing.
As for the present evildoers and their hatred for Jesus Christ and His
children, I close with this.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or
persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword?…In all these things we are
more than conquerors…for I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels,
principalities, powers, nor things present nor things to come…can separate us from
the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35-39
