Disarming those one intends to oppress is one of the hallmarks of socialism; they all do/did it — far-left, as Stalin examples so well, or far-right, as Hitler does (and yes, socialists all like to downplay the fact that the Nazis WERE socialists, just not lefty ones!). They prove by doing this that they mean to do evil things to people, that will upset them, and threaten them, so they hope to safeguard their grotty selves by taking away every means of defence they possibly can.
