Looking at mankind in general and Israel in particular, here is something to consider. God has laid out three dispensations for the fulfillment of His plans for man. The first is this present age which began with the creation, and which will come to a close at the Day of the Lord. The second will be the 1000 year reign of Christ here on earth. The third will be the never-ending eternal ages, complete with a new heaven and earth, and New Jerusalem. There are prophecies for Israel concerning all three of these ages.
It is vital in looking at Israel in prophecy, that when the Lord is speaking to Israel, He is speaking specifically to the literal nation of Israel. He is not speaking to the church of Christ. There has been a very erroneous and harmful teaching that declares that when Israel rejected Christ, God rejected them forever, and the church has replaced them; nothing could be further from the truth. A simple reading of the prophets, the words of Christ, and the apostle Paul absolutely refute that false teaching.
Then we must understand that the word of the Lord is to be taken literal when the meaning is clear that it is meant to be taken literally. The birth, life, and death of Jesus Christ vividly demonstrates how God spoke forth literal prophecies through the Old Testament prophets.
Just a few examples: Jesus would be born of a virgin; He would be born in Bethlehem Ephrathah (there were two Bethlehems at the time). Jesus would be despised and rejected by His own people; He would be betrayed by His close companion; they would gamble for His clothes; Jesus would be led like a lamb to the slaughter. And a most telling one in the Lord’s own words, “…They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me.” Psalm 22:16 Those words were written in the first person, past tense, 1000 years before Christ was crucified.
The Old Testament contains many prophecies concerning Israel and their future. I’m going to begin with Ezekiel, chapters 34-39. Keep in mind that the prophetic word to Israel was the Lord God speaking to a nation of people He had chosen and set His love on. He had chastised them sorely, and disciplined them much for their disobedience, but revealed His heart towards them when He spoke these words to them: “…I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11
The Lord God’s purpose is made clear in His prophecies: He is going to fully restore the fortunes of Israel, and in doing so, the nations will see that He is the Sovereign Lord God Almighty, and will do as He pleases. The Lord says this many times in the book of Ezekiel. The Lord is very specific in chapters 34-39 as to what He is going to do in the future for Israel. Those chapters are divided up into four divisions, and that is how, with the Lord’s help, I will try to lay them out.
The Lord promises the people (notice the “I wills”), “I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land, Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:24-26
Finally, the Lord speaks to Israel’s enemies, “…You shall fall upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; I will give you to the birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. You shall fall on the open field; for I have spoken,” says the Lord God. Ezekiel 39:4-5
The Lord willing, Part III will come next week.
