There is a pandemic in the Western world — especially, but not only, in America — that few are talking about, let alone addressing.
This pandemic doesn’t actually kill people. But it does destroy people, ruin lives, crush families and cause permanent, debilitating pain — far more than have the vast majority of cases of COVID-19.
This pandemic consists of adult children who have decided never again to speak to one or both of their parents. The vast majority of these people were never sexually or physically abused. In fact, nearly all were loved by their parents.
So, then, why have these people decided to hurt their mother, their father or both in one of the worst ways possible?
There are three primary reasons.
The first is the ascent of the therapeutic mentality. Prior to the explosion of psychotherapy, people were governed by “shoulds.” Beginning in the 1960s, however, the therapeutic model replaced the moral model as the guide to one’s behavior. People who lived at that time will recall the phrase, “there are no shoulds.
”I will use a family story to illustrate this point. Despite the fact that his mother was a very difficult woman, my father called her every night, and every night she would yell at him. I heard the yelling because instead of holding it to his ear, my father would place the phone on the kitchen table while she ranted.
Had my father been born a generation later and gone to a therapist where he discussed his mother, if he said how much he dreaded calling his mother, the therapist would likely have led my father to believe there was no reason he should talk to her. And a culture that declared, “there are no shoulds,” would have concurred. The therapist would have declared my grandmother “toxic” and thereby given my father the green light to avoid calling her.
But my father lived in the age of shoulds, and he was a religious Jew who had been taught the Ten Commandments since childhood — the Fifth of which commands us, “Honor your father and mother.” Moreover, he believed, as did most Americans, that the Ten Commandments were given by God.
In our post-biblical age, there are no Ten Commandments. In fact, there are no commandments, period. That’s what “no shoulds” was all about — no Commandments. Instead, you do what you feel is right. If you don’t feel like talking to your mother or father, you don’t. My father, governed by the Ten Commandments and many other shoulds, called his mother every night despite the fact that he rarely felt like doing so.
Though the Bible commands us to love our neighbor, love the stranger and love God, there is no commandment to love our parents. On the other hand, there is no commandment to honor anyone except our parents.
A second reason for the Ignore-Parents (IP) pandemic is parental alienation. This is usually caused by one parent against the other during and/or after a divorce — frequently, though certainly not always, by the mother against the father. She is so angry at her husband or soon-to-be ex-husband that she has decided to hurt him in one of the worst possible ways — by convincing one or more of their children that their father is a terrible human being, unworthy of their love, respect and time. The children should therefore not only cease to love him but have nothing to do with him.
A third reason for the IP pandemic is ideological. In these instances, a spouse may be involved, but often it is the decision of the child. This is the newest reason for ignoring parents. I suspect few of us ever encountered parents whose children did not speak to them because of how the parent voted. As much as Democrats and other liberals hated Richard Nixon, it is hard to imagine a grown man or woman in the late ’60s or early ’70s refusing to speak to a parent because the parent voted for Nixon. But there are probably hundreds of thousands of parents who voted for Donald Trump who have a child who will not speak to them because of that vote — or because the parent holds some conservative value such as that marriage should be defined as the union of a man and a woman.
For the record, I am not speaking about myself. My two sons and two stepsons and I speak regularly, love one another and share values. But I know how lucky I am. I have written this column because I have spoken with an inordinate number of wonderful people who have a child or even children who do not speak with them.
Yes, there are times when a parent is so pathological or evil — or when it is the parent who has chosen to ignore a child — that communication is essentially impossible. But in general, the infliction of such pain on a parent is about as great an act of cruelty as most people will ever inflict on another human being. If there is a God who gave the Ten Commandments, these people will be judged accordingly. source
A couple of things: I chose to post this piece by Dennis Prager because I know that there are families who are being ripped apart by various issues – politics is a big one.
But I want to make sure that the reader knows that Prager is not a believer in Jesus Christ. He is, however, A strong Conservative thinker and a very talented writer.
I have spoken to many brothers and sisters in Christ who are experiencing heartbreaking dynamics with their children and with others in their families. This one not talking to that one – etc etc. Remember when we were told to not discuss ‘politics or religion’ at the dinner table?
But please know this – if the source of the anger in your family is your belief in Jesus and the Gospel, then you should go to this passage of Scripture from Jesus frequently:
“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 10:34-39).
COME QUICKLY LORD JESUS!

Mat_24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
iniquities: something that is unjust or wicked : sin
Luk_23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
This is so well written, I can add nothing but thank you and amen.
Blessings sis. Have a wonderful day
So many people need to hear this. Thank you for posting!
You’re welcome!
I learned to ignore my mother while still honoring her as such. I didn’t hate her or hold a grudge but she was very vindictive & u could easily become the enemy with just a word. I became the enemy but it was never clear, why. No one really knew what the source of her problems were so I learned to avoid her because any attempt at a normal relationship would bring out the hate thing which was tiresome, nonproductive & if u didn’t agree with her then U would be the enemy as well.
Many times I wished I could have had the normal mom/son relationship but it was always a minefield not worth trespassing. I had better relations with my 2 step moms. However, I do think she’s in heaven & all things will be anew as they should be…so I look forward to that day.
It’s important to fix things in family as they come up in this life but all need to be reconcilable to that end with Jesus as our Counselor. Anyway that’s my 2 cents worth of life’s learning process. I learned thru Eph 4:30-32 to not let anger & bitterness get hold of my heart. It can be consuming & damage everyone around us including our relationship with Christ.
Will post…..
I forgot prt 2 until after I sent it the initial one. Didn’t realize Geri would post it…so maybe someone could learn something.
I had no contact with Mom for at least 10 yrs although she only lived about 12 miles away. Dad had remarried & I had as well & divorced. I would have to pass Mom’s house to get to Dad’s. They lived about 2miles apart.
Then lately I would get kind of a spiritual nudge to stop (don’t ignore those) as I passed by & visit her but I ignored it because I never felt welcome. Anyway the nudging kept persisting, so I pulled into her driveway 1 evening & knocked on her door. Immediately her “killer” German Shep went nuts inside. I knew she had a gun too cuz everybody, she thought was out to get her. In time she peeped thru the reveal hole in the door & wanted to know who it was & I introduced myself as “her oldest son”. Slowly, cautiously the door cracked opened & I was invited in after the mutt was put away & I got a thorough visual inspection. U’d think I was selling magazines door to door or worse. Anyway we had a verbal non-threatening conversation & it did touch on the Lord. I was encouraged somewhat but I sensed her coldness.
I decided to leave & I gave her my ph#. That was my last visit with her. My last ph conversation with her evolved into me being the enemy again just like “all the rest of us men”. Mentally I threw up my hands at any chance of reconciliation. I felt a load off my shoulders. Any guilt or wondering how I messed it all up disappeared in an instant. I gave the Lord credit for that as well. I had tried & obeyed God to try 1 more time.
Not long after that conversation she had a stroke & lay on her hallway floor for a few days b4 anyone checked on her & called the police to get in there.
They ambulanced her to the hospital but she died sometime afterwards. My brother had been assigned executor of her will & she made him promise not to tell me anything until after she died. I was still persona non grata. My bro told me later that prior to her stroke she had cut me out of her will but at the last minute put me back in which had to be the Lord working. I didn’t know about any of those things.
She was a Christian so even we can hate to the max for no reason..that’s a scary thought to harbor that kind of devilish stuff & still praise the Lord too.
I guess there’s more to tell but this is enough except I still don’t know why she hated so much. Maybe some of you have “been there, done that”. Jesus is your & my answer to that situation.
My pt in all this is just to say if u know Jesus as your Savior & Lord, He has promised to NEVER leave us or forsake us. That’s a HUGE comfort even amidst the ones u feel close to when they make u the enemy. Once you are saved Jesus will NEVER be your enemy…ur his adopted son…forever & u have a new forever, eternal family who love u just like Jesus. That’s the bestes family everyone desires the mostest & u only get it from Jesus.
The hymn, “What a friend we have in Jesus..” is the greatest understatement of all time. If ur not familiar with that hymn, Google it & find some comfort in the words. Then get yourself saved! Join the family of God!
I posted part 2……..
Sometimes fellowship just isn’t possible. Sad and tragic. Perhaps that’s what the apostle Paul had in mind when he wrote in 1 Cor 5, But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.” A reviler is an abusive person, someone we might nowadays think of as a narcissist or borderliner. Even is someone ‘calls’ themselves a Christian, such persistent unrepentant behavior can rightly cause others to avoid them. I’ve lived it & know how Dale feels. It’s heavy.
