DIED SUDDENLY: 45-Year-Old Houston Rapper ‘Big Pokey’ Drops Dead on Stage During Live Performance (VIDEO)

Milton ‘Big Pokey’ Powell, the rapper who was considered an essential pillar of Houston’s music industry, tragically collapsed on stage during a performance in Beaumont, Texas, early Sunday morning.

Big Pokey was one of the featured performers during the Juneteenth celebration at the Pour09 Bar & Rooftop lounge.

The news of his unexpected passing was shared on Instagram by his publicist.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Milton ‘Big Pokey’ Powell. Big Pokey passed away on June 18, 2023. He was well-loved by his family, his friends, and his loyal fans. In the coming days, we will release information about his celebration of life and how the public can pay their respects. We ask that you respect his family and their privacy during this difficult time. Big Pokey will forever be ‘The Hardest Pit in the Litter.’” 

The shocking incident, which was captured on video and later circulated on social media by @blackjamesss, showed the 45-year-old artist gasping and then falling backward in the middle of his performance.

A healthcare professional present in the crowd immediately administered CPR, and a police officer was also present. The emergency responders arrived shortly after to transport the unconscious rapper to a local hospital.

Despite their efforts, Big Pokey succumbed to his unknown condition shortly after midnight.

Big Pokey’s sudden death will be investigated. His cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.

Pour09 Bar & Rooftop released a statement on their Facebook page following the incident.

“The City of Houston and I extend our prayers and condolences to our own Screwed Up Click legendary rapper #BigPokey family and friends. Though many called him “low key”, his presence was larger than life in helping to catapult our hip hop scene nationally. We are grateful,” Turner wrote.

DIED SUDDENLY: 16-Year-Old Alexandria High School Student Dies Suddenly at Home

A freshman at Alexandria City High School was found dead in his room on Tuesday morning, and his family is still looking for answers about what happened.

Yonatan Vazquez Méndez, 16, was found lifeless in his bedroom by his father, one day after they all had a birthday party.

“I saw him lying on the floor. I ran and hugged him,” Vazquez Méndez’s father, Daniel Vasquez, told Telemundo44.

The teen’s parents have stated they had no clue what caused their son’s death.

According to NBC News, they had a birthday party for Mendez’s mom just the night before he died.

“I don’t understand what happened to my son because he had a life with many plans for him. I don’t even know what to say because he was a very obedient child,” the teen’s mother, María Anabel Méndez, said.

The cause of death of Yonatan Vazquez Méndez is under investigation.

A GoFundMe was created for the Vazquez Mendez family that had raised almost $6,000 as of Sunday, May 7.

“Yonathan was a son, brother, cousin, nephew, friend, and most importantly a child of God,” the fundraising page reads.

“He dedicated his time and life to Jesus Christ alongside his family and played the guitar in his congregation. During his free time he loved spending time with his family watching movies, play video games, while eating pizza and drinking his Starbucks. We ask during this difficult time that you pray for our family and we appreciate whatever amount God places in your heart, we thank you very much. God bless you!” (emphasis added)

In an email obtained by Daily Voice, ACHS Principal Peter Balas broke the news of Yonatan’s terrible death to the school community.

“Yonatan has been part of the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) family since he was in middle school, and his passing is a sad and tragic loss for his family, friends and our school community.

“He was always respectful and was well liked by his peers. On behalf of the entire Titan community, we send our thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones.”

The family’s apartment was crowded Thursday with relatives who drove from Texas when they got the tragic news.

“I still can’t believe it because one day we had him with us and the other day we didn’t,” said Yonatan’s cousin Sindi Méndez.

His cousins said they saw Yonatan as a brother.

“He was very humble, sweet, kind, smart, energetic. He was, he was the type of person that … like, he was always there for you,” cousin Chris Depaz said.

Music was Yonatan’s passion and something he’d hoped to pursue as a profession, his family said. He played guitar for their church’s band every Sunday.

His parents said Yonatan had an important role in their family looking out for his two younger siblings and using his English language skills to help take care of the bills and other household business.

Alexandria police said they’re investigating the circumstances of the teen’s death and whether it had anything to do with opioids. They are awaiting a report from the medical examiner.

The family, however, said they’ve never seen any indication their son had tried drugs.

“I had a meeting with the counselor, and he said that they had never seen anything with Yonatan, and he told me, ‘Really, I congratulate you for being vigilant because not all mothers are like you,” María Anabel Méndez said. Source

Tori Bowie, the sprinter who won three Olympic medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, has died. She was 32.

Bowie’s death was announced Wednesday by her management company and USA Track and Field.

No cause of death was given.

Her agent, Kimberly Holland, told CNN that Bowie was found dead at home in Florida.

“We’re devasted to share the very sad news that Tori Bowie has passed away. We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister,” Icon Management said on Twitter. “Tori was a champion … a beacon of light that shined so bright!

“We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family and friends.”

“USATF is deeply saddened by the passing of Tori Bowie, a three-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champion,” USA Track and Field said. “A talented athlete, her impact on the sport is immeasurable, and she will be greatly missed.”


In a news release, the group said she was “[o]ne of the most exciting athletes to come out of the state of Mississippi.”

Growing up in Sandhill, a few miles northeast of Jackson, Bowie was coaxed into track as a teenager and quickly rose up the ranks as a sprinter and long jumper.

She attended Southern Mississippi, where she swept the long jump NCAA championships at the indoor and outdoor events in 2011.

Bowie turned in an electric performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won silver in the 100 and bronze in the 200. She then ran the anchor leg on a 4×100 team with Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix and English Gardner to take gold.

A year later, she won the 100 meters at the 2017 world championships in London. She also helped the 4×100 team to gold.

Bowie was taken in by her grandmother as an infant after she was left at a foster home.

She considered herself a basketball player and only reluctantly showed up for track, but Bowie was a fast learner, becoming a state champion in the 100, 200 and long jump before going to college.

Her first major international medal was a 100-meter bronze at the worlds in 2015. After winning, she said, “my entire life my grandmother told me I could do whatever I set my mind to.”

“Off the track, Bowie was a professional fashion model and walked the runway at Paris Fashion Week in 2019 for Y-3, a collaboration label between her athletic sponsor, adidas, and Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto,” USA Track and Field said.

“She also featured in Valentino’s 2018 Resort campaign and did work with Stella McCartney.”
