Today is Purim, the festival on which we celebrate the demise of our archenemy Haman, whose burning desire to eliminate all the Jews from a vast empire was thwarted by Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai together with the hidden hand of God.

The Torah portion of Zachor, which we read annually on the Shabbat before Purim, contains one of the most powerful and eternal mitzvot in the Torah: the commandment to remember Amalek and never forget what they did to us.

“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way, when you were coming out of Egypt. How he happened upon you on the way, and struck those of you who were feeble at the rear, when you were tired and weary; and he did not fear God.” (Deuteronomy 25:17-18)

This mitzvah is not merely a call to historical memory – it is a directive for action. Amalek represents the eternal enemy of the Jewish people, those who seek to destroy us without reason, driven by hatred alone.

The commandment to remember Amalek is especially relevant today as Israel finds itself engaged in an existential battle against Hamas, Hezbollah, and their patron, Iran – modern embodiments of Amalek’s cruelty and evil.

The tactics of Amalek: Then and now

The Torah describes Amalek’s attack as particularly despicable. They did not confront Israel in a conventional battle; instead, they ambushed the weak and vulnerable from behind.

They exploited Israel’s exhaustion and lack of preparedness, attacking those least able to defend themselves.

This strategy is eerily similar to the methods employed by Hamas and Hezbollah.

The massacre of October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists slaughtered over a thousand innocent civilians – men, women, children, and the elderly – was a modern-day Amalekite attack. Just as Amalek targeted the weakest among us, so too did Hamas.

They did not challenge Israel on a battlefield; they stormed homes, burned families alive, and took hostages – acts of pure barbarism. Hezbollah, sitting in Lebanon with its arsenal of rockets aimed at Israeli cities, operates under the same spirit of indiscriminate hatred and terror.

And behind them stands Iran, the greatest state sponsor of terror, whose leaders openly call for the annihilation of Israel and work relentlessly to arm our enemies. Like Amalek, they fear no divine morality, only pursuing destruction for its own sake.

The Torah’s response: ERADICATE  AMALEK

The Torah’s response to Amalek is absolute: “You shall erase the memory of Amalek from under the heavens; do not forget.” (Deuteronomy 25:19) This is not a call for vengeance but for justice.

Amalek cannot be appeased or reasoned with. When facing an enemy whose sole mission is to annihilate the Jewish people, there is only one response – total eradication of their power and influence.

Israel’s war against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran is not a war of conquest; it is a war of survival. The Torah does not instruct us to attack those who pose no threat; rather, it mandates the destruction of those who seek our destruction.

This is why the Jewish people have a moral obligation to fight, just as Joshua fought Amalek in the wilderness and as King Saul was commanded to destroy Amalek in the time of the prophets.

Failure to act: A lesson from King Saul

We also recall the tragic story of King Saul, who was commanded by the prophet Samuel to destroy Amalek completely. But Saul hesitated. He spared King Agag and the best of the Amalekite livestock.

For this failure, Hashem removed the kingship from him, and Amalek’s evil continued – eventually giving rise to Agag’s descendant Haman, the genocidal villain of the Purim story. (emphasis added)

This episode teaches us a painful lesson: when we fail to fully eliminate evil, it returns to threaten us again. How many times has Israel withdrawn from territory, only to see it become a base for terror?

How many times has Israel shown restraint, hoping for peace, only to be met with more rockets, kidnappings, and massacres?

The lesson of King Saul is clear – when we have the opportunity to dismantle the forces of Amalek, we must not hesitate.

Moral clarity in war

Some in the international community call for Israel to “show restraint,” to negotiate with terrorists, to make compromises with those who openly seek our destruction. But Purim reminds us that there is no negotiating with Amalek. There is no peace treaty to be made with those who deny our right to exist. We must not be fooled by calls for diplomacy when our enemies have made their intentions clear.

At the same time, we must conduct this war with the ethical framework that has always defined Am Yisrael. Unlike our enemies, who celebrate the murder of civilians, Israel’s fight is one of self-defense, guided by moral principles.

The IDF takes extraordinary measures to minimize civilian casualties, even as our enemies hide behind human shields. This is the difference between Israel and Amalek – one fights for survival, the other for destruction.

The mitzvah of “Remembering Amalek” is not fulfilled merely by reading a few verses from the Torah once a year, or by banging a noisy drum at the mention of Haman’s name. It demands action. How do we fulfill it today?

Support the soldiers: Just as Joshua led the fight against Amalek, so too do our brave soldiers fight today. They need our unwavering support, whether through donations, advocacy, or simple expressions of gratitude.

Fight the battle of truth: The war against Amalek is also a war of narratives. Our enemies spread lies about Israel, portraying the victim as the aggressor. We must counter these lies with truth, educating the world about the justness of our cause.

Strengthen our faith: Amalek represents not only physical enemies but also spiritual doubt. In times of crisis, we must strengthen our faith and commitment, knowing that God guides history and protects His people.

Purim reminds us that Amalek can be defeated. Haman, a descendant of Amalek, sought to wipe out the Jewish people, yet he himself was destroyed, and the Jews emerged victorious. The same will be true today. Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran may plot against us, but they will also meet their downfall, and the nation of Israel will endure. (emphasis added) source

I have a cool app called Flightradar24, which tracks all commercial airline flights. I use it a lot because my kids travel a lot. One of the things that becomes patently obvious is that there are a lot of planes in the air at any given time and the vast majority don’t crash. When they do, though, it’s absolutely devastating, and shakes people’s faith in the entire air travel industry. That faith is shaken even more when we learn that merit may have nothing to do with the air traffic controllers directing those planes.

Part of the reason people are shaken by air crashes is because, when a commercial flight crashes, the casualties are so high. The recent collision between a helicopter and a commercial flight at Ronald Reagan National Airport killed everyone involved, both on the plane and the helicopter.

These crashes are also devastating because they remind us how utterly helpless we are. When we drive, even though there’s always the possibility of a rogue driver doing something so horrific that there’s no avoiding the accident, we still feel as if we have some control. If we’re smart, responsible, and attentive, and if we maintain our cars well, we can mostly be safe.

The thing about airplanes, though, is that our safety is entirely out of our hands. We must trust the airline maintenance policies and workers, the pilots, and the air traffic controllers to do their jobs right. We’re most likely to trust the pilots—as long as they’re not suicidal—because their immediate fates are tied to ours. It becomes more dicey when we’re looking at people who control our lives, without their decisions directly affecting them.

That gets us to the air traffic controllers (“ATCs”). If you’ve been around awhile, you may remember when the ATCs went on strike in 1981, something President Reagan defined as a “peril to national safety.” When 90% refused to return to work, he fired 11,345 of them. People were terribly worried about whether travel would be safe after that, but, while there were accidents, there were surprisingly major downstream safety problems. That’s probably because the new hires were properly qualified.

And that brings us to the point of this essay, which is the real possibility that, in the name of DEI, many current ATCs attained their positions through race-based applications and fraud, rather than actual qualifications. That, at least, is the only conclusion to be drawn from a Daily Mail exposé about a DEI activist who gave minority applicants to the ATC program the answers to an entry exam that was already tailored to exclude white men.

The story begins in 2014, during Obama’s presidency, when the government rejiggered the questionnaire for determining which people should enter the air traffic training program. You and I might expect that the questionnaire tested people on their ability to do mathematical calculations (i.e., speed and distance), who had good visual skills (i.e., reading the radar), who were intelligent and had previously related experience, who had quick reactions times, and who showed coolness under pressure. I mean, I’d want that in an ATC.

But that’s not what the Obama administration was looking for. Instead, it created a questionnaire that was intended to find and give preference to minority applicants without explicitly asking their race:

The aspiring controllers were given extra credit for being ‘risk takers’, in the bizarre multiple-choice quiz to secretly prioritize DEI applicants.

It required virtually no knowledge of aviation to pass but top marks were awarded to candidates who ‘need a great deal of time to complete assignments’ and ‘take chances very often’.

And playing three or more sports in high school was rated more valuable than having a stint as an air traffic controller in the military.

The majority of controller jobs had previously gone to veterans or standout graduates from government-accredited college programs who earned a place on a ‘qualified applicant register’.

They had all passed a rigorous, peer-reviewed aptitude test, the AT-SAT, which prioritized numerical ability, decisiveness and complex problem solving.

‘You might get a question saying an airplane takes off and is climbing at 380 feet per minute at 230 miles per hour, how high will it be after 28 minutes?’ explained Sam Fischer, a professor in the aviation department of Florida State College at Jacksonville.

‘You had to do that in your head. There was no pencil, no pen, no calculator.’

When a 2012 ‘barrier analysis’ suggested the AT-SAT posed a problem for minority applicants, lobbyists from the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE) succeeded in getting it scrapped.

Potential hires would still have to take a shorter cognitive test known as the AT-SA – but first they had to navigate a ‘biographical assessment’, taken online with no time limit.

To emphasize its importance, the biographical score was worth 2.5 times the cognition portion when determining whether a candidate would land a job and progress to the FAA’s Air Traffic Controller Academy.

Given the mass racial pander that the entry exam had become, you’d think that would be sufficient to favor a whole new cohort of minority applicants. Sadly, though, some were still struggling—and that’s where Shelton Snow comes in. According to the Daily Mail, Snow is “a top ‘DEI’ activist” and “air traffic operations supervisor.” He was “caught on voicemail allegedly offering minority air traffic controller candidates the chance to cheat in a make-or-break entry exam.”

The audio-clip alleged shows Snow offering screenshots to minority applicants showing how to answer specific questions.

The Daily Mail acknowledges that it doesn’t know how many—if any—people took advantage of Snow’s alleged help. What is known is that, because the test was so weird, and had little to do with people who had actually useful skill sets, everyone was struggling to pass it:

Critics say the quixotic blend of multiple-choice questions was designed to screen out elite, mostly white students from FAA-accredited college courses who excelled in traditional aptitude tests.

Nonetheless, it was proving incredibly tricky for anyone to pass – with a 90 percent failure rate – when Snow decided to intervene.

Maybe no one cheated. Maybe the ones who cheated still become top-flight ATCs. But we don’t know.

What we do know is that, when it comes to flying, not only are we, the passengers, out of control, but we are at the mercy of people who have opted to staff our life-or-death ATC system with people chosen for the color of their skin, rather than their actual abilities. source

Brethren, I have been writing commentaries regarding DEI hires in the ATC (Air Traffic Control) industry since there has been such an exorbitantly high number of airplane near-misses, crashes, roll-overs and fires since the beginning of this year. I never remember this many mishaps, injuries and deaths from plane crashes so close together – not in my entire life.

I believe that this article from American Thinker is the first piece I’ve read which cuts to the heart of what is truly going on. But I will take it a step further. I believe that it is possible that during the Biden years, the powers that be in that administration made sure that there were enough competent ATC workers and Pilots to insure the safety of most aircraft and passengers. 

No president would want the horrors that have been happening in our skies under their administration!

But I also believe that the ‘applicants’ who were blatantly incompetent were most likely put on a (DEI) waiting list, if you will, and told that their turns would come – to be patient with the system. And I believe that their turns did indeed come – AFTER the Election of Donald J. Trump.

Think about the timing of these crashes in 2025 – right after President Trump won the election in a Landslide victory, and as so many journalists have written “The People Have Spoken.’

Brethren – the timing is suspicious at best. We must pray that President Trump will make this a priority- a huge investigation that gets to the bottom of this situation.
