A Night Meant for Light
I am writing these words with a heavy heart.
On the first night of Hanukkah—the Festival of Lights, when Jewish families around the world were lighting candles to remember God’s miraculous deliverance—gunmen opened fire on a celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, one of the most iconic places on earth.
Families had gathered in joy. Children were present. A rabbi devoted to serving his community. A Holocaust survivor who had already endured the worst evil of the twentieth century. In a matter of moments, celebration turned to terror.
The Oldest Hatred Wearing New Clothes
Twenty-five centuries ago, Haman stood before the king of Persia and offered a lie designed to justify genocide. His accusations formed a template that has been repeated ever since: They are different. They are disloyal. They are dangerous. They are disposable.
The language changes. The spirit does not.
When Words Become Violence
History teaches us something sobering: genocide never begins with mass graves. It begins with words—propaganda that dehumanizes, marginalizes, and demonizes until violence against a people feels justified, even righteous.
Before the Holocaust, there was Der Stürmer. Before Rwanda, there were radio broadcasts calling human beings “cockroaches.” And in our own day, we have watched language harden, lies spread, and hatred normalize at a pace few imagined possible.
The Flood Is Here
Since October 7, 2023—the deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust—antisemitism has surged across the world. Jewish students hide their Stars of David on campus. Families remove mezuzahs from their doors. And now, on a beach in Australia, Jewish families lighting Hanukkah candles were targeted with gunfire.
The flood is here.
But in the midst of darkness, God allowed a light to shine.
A Man Who Ran Toward the Gunfire
There is a hero in this story, and his name is Ahmed al-Ahmed.
He is not a Christian. He is not a Jew. But when evil erupted on that beach, he did the right thing at the right time.
While others ran from the gunfire, Ahmed ran toward it.
Video footage shows him waiting for his moment, then charging an armed attacker from behind, tackling him to the ground, and wrestling the weapon from his hands. He turned the gun back toward the shooter, stopping the killing. Moments later, a second gunman opened fire on him from a nearby bridge. Ahmed was shot twice—once in the arm and once in the hand.
He nearly died protecting Jewish families he had never met, celebrating a holiday that was not his own.
Authorities later said that many people are alive today because of his courage. And that is exactly right.
Deliverance From Another Place
I want you to pause and take that in.
A man who did not share the faith of those he rescued nevertheless stood between the innocent and the violent. He did not ask what it would cost him. He did not calculate political implications. He saw evil and refused to cooperate with it.
Scripture shows us again and again that God is not limited in whom He uses. Cyrus of Persia. Rahab of Jericho. The Good Samaritan in Jesus’ parable. Time after time, deliverance for God’s people has arisen “from another place” (Esther 4:14).
Ahmed al-Ahmed was that deliverance.
Christians Do Not Hate People—We Hate Evil
There is a dangerous lie circulating today—that Christians are supposed to hate people of other faiths. That is false. It is not biblical, and it is not Christian.
Christians do not hate people. We hate evil.
Christians do not hate people.
We hate murder.
We hate terrorism.
We hate the slaughter of children.
We hate the demonic hatred that targets the Jewish people generation after generation.
We hate evil with every fiber of our beings.
And we oppose that evil wherever it appears—without apology, without qualification, and without compromise.
When someone stands against that evil—when they protect innocent lives, bless God’s people, and place themselves between the violent and the vulnerable—we bless them too.
Blessing Those Who Bless God’s People
The Bible is clear: God blesses those who bless His people. And we align ourselves with that promise.
The lie of our age says hatred is inevitable, that courage is tribal, that compassion only extends to those who look like us or believe like us. Ahmed shattered that lie in a single act of bravery. Evil did not expect resistance from him. Never fear. God will raise up deliverers from the most unlikely places. And because Ahmed refused to remain silent, lives were spared.
During the Holocaust, we honor the Righteous Among the Nations—those who were not Jewish yet risked everything to save Jewish lives. History will remember Ahmed al-Ahmed in that same company. He stood against evil not because it benefited him, because it likely will not, but because it was right.
For Such a Time as This
“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 NKJV).
Ahmed al-Ahmed did not quote Scripture on that beach. But he understood its truth instinctively. God raised him up for such a time as this.
That is the question this moment places before every one of us. Will we stand when truth is costly? Will we speak when silence is easier? Will we run toward danger—or convince ourselves that someone else will handle it?
The Candles Still Burn
The Jewish people cannot be erased—not by Haman, not by Hitler, not by terrorists, not by mobs, not by slogans, and not by bullets. Their survival is proof that God keeps His Covenant promises. But every generation must decide whether it will stand with truth or shrink back into silence.
Tonight, as Hanukkah candles burn in homes around the world—some lit with trembling hands—they also burn with the defiant hope of a people who have survived every Haman for three thousand years. And they burn knowing that when evil came for them on a beach in Sydney, and the God of Israel raised up one unlikely man to run toward the gunfire to stop it.
We should pray for Ahmed al-Ahmed—for his full recovery, for healing in his body, and for peace for his family. May God bless him, protect him, and reward his courage. And in ways only God can orchestrate, may He remember Ahmed when He comes into His Kingdom.
God will use whomever He chooses to rescue His people. The only question is whether we will have the courage to be among those who stand when the moment comes.
